Samsung are catching up on AI

Samsung have announced they’re finally going to offer their own virtual assistant, Bixby. The ‘agent’ will first appear on the Galaxy S8 with a dedicated button to launch. Unlike Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana, Bixby is not focused on being ‘knowledgeable’, but is designed to let you seamlessly switch between voice command and touch interfaces, and help you along various steps of your task. In other words, Samsung know they can’t compete with Microsoft and other competitors when it comes to search, but claim that their deeper integration of Bixby within apps and refined context awareness will make the ‘agent’ more useful than virtual assistants.

LinkedIn set to roll out Matched Audiences

Following a reskin of their platform, LinkedIn are continuing to play catch up in the digital advertising space. In November this year, the platform is set to launch an ad targeting program called Matched Audiences, which will enable businesses to target ads based on people’s email addresses, as well as retarget website visitors. The new targeting options are proposed to be optimised for LinkedIn’s Sponsored Content and Sponsored InMail campaigns, meaning ads can appear in feeds and personal inboxes. Although these ad targeting opportunities hardly vary from what other social platforms are already doing, the difference is in the professional audience and content of LinkedIn itself.

Domino’s bring Ferris Bueller back in ‘Home for Pizza’

Domino’s have borrowed the running-home scene from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ in order to promote the Domino’s Tracker. Just as Ferris had previously raced home to beat his parents in the classic movie, actor Joe Keery (from Stranger Things) tries to beat the pizza man whilst tracking his pizza delivery on his smartwatch. It is a pretty accurate remake, with the commercial even being filmed on location at the same house used in the movie.  Domino’s know that customers find their tracker to be a fun part of ordering, and through combining this technology with a cult classic, the end result is a quirky, memorable ad.

Fruit of the Loom don’t think you’re soft

Fruit of the Loom’s latest spot advertises a tough shirt with a soft side. The ad takes viewers on ‘the most epic story ever told’ featuring a guy who must prove he’s a ‘manly man’ in order to advertise something soft. He goes to drastic lengths to demonstrate his masculinity including riding a grizzly bear, self-tattooing his neck and shaving with a hatchet.  The over-exaggerated effort (reminiscent of that Old Spice commercial) leads to him delivering the line, “you don’t have to be a softie to love how soft it is.” Slightly predictable and very American, but you’ve got to watch to the end – if only to watch a man have a Besser Block dropped on his head.

YouTube accused of hiding LGBT+ videos in ‘restricted mode’

YouTube have been accused of discriminating against their LGBT+ users by hiding videos that address particular topics, such as dating and attraction, in ‘restricted mode’. A YouTube spokesperson later clarified that the mode is an “optional feature used by a very small subset of users” and that “subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear” with this filter. However, YouTuber Tyler Oakley (who has more than 8 million subscribers) found his uncontroversial video titled “8 Black LGBTQ+ Trailblazers Who Inspire Me” to be completely invisible in the mode, making people question the algorithm used to flag appropriate videos. The debate is still continuing under the hashtag #YouTubeIsOverParty while the company claims to be looking into users’ concerns.

Google remembers where you parked your car

The latest beta version of Google Maps for Android has new features that will remind you where you parked your car. The update allows you to easily save your parking location, add parking notes (eg parking lot floor), set a timer to remind you how long you can park for and even add photos to remind you of the surroundings. Many seem to think this is a ‘maps-first’, but Google isn’t the only player in this game. Apple Maps created similar parking reminders last year.
