Amazon Wants You to Grab Your Groceries ‘To Go’

Amazon have created a grocery store free from queues or checkouts using an array of sensors to detect which items leave the store with you. Located in Seattle, Amazon Go users simply have to scan their Amazon app upon entry to the store. Once they leave with a basket of groceries, the bill is charged to their Amazon account, literally giving shoppers the freedom to grab their groceries to go. The store is currently only open to Amazon employees, but will be launching to the public early next year.

Advertisers on Snapchat are feeling pretty sorry for themselves this week, after a 33% slump in daily Discover viewership resulting from the app’s most recent update. Last month, sponsored content was moved below the fold to sit underneath friends’ Stories. The drop hasn’t come as a surprise to everyone, with many frustrated publishers predicting an adverse effect on Discover performance after the change was announced. Discover channels  used to be  prime real estate for digital publishers, as they only required oneswipe access from users.

Netflix Gets Creepy, Targets Ad Blocker Users

To promote their sci-fi satire series ‘Black Mirror’, Netflix have tapped into an audience that many media shops have deemed unreachable: internet users with ad blockers. Partnering with Mashable, The Next Web and Slate, Netflix ensured that ad blocker users who visited these sites would see an ad featuring a disturbing message, “Hello ad blocker user. You cannot see the ad. But the ad can see you.” The creative communicates Black Mirror’s dark take on modern technology perfectly: the copy appears on a background of smashed glass with a crack in the shape of a (very creepy) smile. If you’re wondering how this clever campaign was put together, The majority of the ad blockers set the JavaScript variable ‘window.noBlocker’. Once the publisher detects that code, the background will change accordingly to display the Netflix banner.

 

Global Digital Spend To Overtake TV in 2017

According to IPG MediabrandsMagna, global digital advertising is expected to top TV for the first time ever in 2017. The big number predicted by the group is 202 – $202 billion dollars in ad spend. This number would represent a market share of 40%, and is also forecast to be majority-generated by mobile impressions. Linear TV isn’t too far behind; this category is expected to bring in $186 billion and have a 36% market share. TL;DR: invest in digital, everyone else is.

Sandy Hook Promise Asks Americans To Pay Attention

A new ad for Sandy Hook Promise a nonprofit led by family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School four years ago is a lesson in paying attention. When watching it for the first time, we are led to believe that the story follows a budding high school romance in an American middle school. This couldn’t be far from the truth, as the ad masterfully distracts the viewer from a parallel storyline about a young man planning a high school shooting. This double story line was inspired by the alarming statistic that 80 percent of school shooters told someone of their plans before taking action. It has been viewed more than 4 million times on YouTube in under a week.

Poland’s Allegro Delivers The Goods With This Heartwarming Christmas Story

The Christmas ads keep on coming and, boy, are there some tearjerkers this year. This beautiful Polish ad from Allegro – the country’s largest online marketplace – tells the story of an elderly man learning English. He orders a complete ‘English for Beginners’ set from the site, and we follow him as he uses the audiobooks to learn a variety of phrases and words. It’s not until the very end that we realise he’s been practicing a very important phrase over and over, which he finally gets to use when he arrives at his son’s house in London to meet the newest member of his family. “Hello, I am your Grandpa”.
