No slurping, please

Coca-Cola is hoping to shame noisy movie-goers into submission with a creative PSA that inserts audience members into a fake scene, aired during the film’s previews. Capturing an unknowing audience with a green screen and hidden camera, the stunt was quickly edited and shown on the big screen to rapturous applause. “We have seen real people in advertising before, but not — to our knowledge — so quickly after they have been filmed, and combined with previously shot footage in this way.  It required a hell of a lot of prep to get it right on the night,” said executive creative director Jason Mendes. “Please keep quiet during the movie,” the end line says. “It’s not the same with you in it.”

Arnold Schwartzenegger has teamed up with to help raise funds for the AfterSchool All Stars program… by crushing things in his tank. Not only is the 66 year old beefcake fulfilling his dreams of crushing everything in site, he’s offering 2 lucky people the chance to fly to LA and join him.  Every entry into the competition supports after school care programs for children right across the U.S.A.

The video has racked up over 8 million views in less than a week.

Facebook unveils ‘premium’ auto-play video ads

Facebook has announced that they’ll be starting to run video ads designed for advertisers who want to reach a large audience with high-quality sight, sound and motion. The 15-second videos will start auto-playing without sound as they enter your screen, and if you tap, they’ll expand and un-mute.

According to the social network, “With Premium Video Ads, brands now have another way of engaging people on Facebook with compelling video experiences. We’ll roll out Premium Video Ads slowly and monitor how people interact with them. This limited introduction allows us to concentrate our efforts on a smaller number of advertisers with high-quality campaigns to create the best possible experience on Facebook.”

For this endeavour, Facebook is employing its longstanding Nielsen relationship, so advertisers can measure audiences somewhat similarly to TV. Ace Metrix will also be on board to help Facebook measure ad quality and user engagement.

Grab a bargain… at your local billboard?

New Zealand softdrink icon, L&P, launched a series of a 3D advertising billboards in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch that allows passers-by to tear off free gifts. As you’ll see in the video below, they tempt commuters with detachable sandals and pop-out towels in this inventive outdoor campaign that is not only striking, but also cements the position of the brand as a Summer icon.

Creative director Guy Roberts said, “We’ve all experienced that sinking feeling when the holidays are over. For many Kiwis, L&P and Summer go hand in hand and we hope this campaign will help Kiwis hold on to that great Summer feeling just a little bit longer.”

Each ad sports a written suggestion for pedestrians to help themselves to pieces of the ad, with one reading, “Hold on to Summer. Grab a towel. Here’s one.”

App of the week

Skrillex’s ‘Alien Ride’ app

Grammy award winning producer & songwriter, Skrillex, has now entered the world of gaming apps… or has he?

In a very clever move, Skrillex has released an app, entitled ‘Alien Ride’, that allows you to unlock his first full length album, ‘Recess’, a song at a time as you progress through the games levels. His album has had a traditional release planned for some time, but this app was a surprise addition to the announcement of his Mothership world tour. The “Alien Ride” app itself offered virtually no clue that it would become the “Recess” album. The iTunes store description reads: “Realize your true potential as an alien as you tilt and fire your way through this compulsive asteroid game, unlocking new features and shooting your way to a high score. Fresh graphics and killer audio will make this your new addiction.”

Suffice to say, once the secret was out, word spread very quickly and fans have been downloading the app like crazy, making the most of the opportunity to devour these songs ahead of schedule.  Try it for yourself.
